Great little pension / guesthouse in Tanabe. Very friendly staff, comfortable futon beds and room, and great coffee for breakfast. Downsides include lack of privacy (thin / paper walls), breakfast on the skimpy side (but delicious) and funky key-sharing system. Charming - but takes a few extra steps to do life things here. About a 10 minute walk from the train station.

We stayed in the guesthouse. Warm friendly service in a traditional Japanese home ( that happens to have a cafe). Basic accommodation. Good value. Good location for seeing Tanabe, from beach to dining. All easy walking distance. Loved their cakes. Delicious.

The staff speak very good English and is super helpful and friendly. Located in a quiet area and also good location to get around the city (just 5-10min walk to bus/train station. They also provide luggage service which is super convenient for Kumano Kodo trekkers. A place to feel homey and to have the taste of very tradition Japanese “futon” style. They are also very considerate to provide early breakfast for trekkers to catch early bus. And the most important of all, the hot shower is very good!!!!!

Me and my partner Mauritz stayed here at the guesthouse on 17/06/2025. Mayumi is a super sweet person and very helpful! We had a lovely stay, the house is traditional Japanese with a very cute garden, it's all very pretty. Mayumi have us some of her Chiffon cakes that I had read about before we came, super tasty!

I ordered their organic coffee, which came with two small pieces of their famous chiffon cake. The coffee was delicious and the chiffon pieces were equally good, and dissolved in your mouth. Service was wonderful and the atmosphere is very comfortable. I didn't know that this cafe also served as a guesthouse. Give them a try!

A quaint little cafe... specializing in handmade chiffon cake from what I can see on their menu. It also rents out some rooms to stay. ICHIE is about a 10 minute walk from Kii-Tanabe Station. I found ICHIE through bookingdotcom. Stayed in a tatami room with the basic futon set-up (love it!) Provided the basics: towels, some toiletries, coffee/tea, and their wonderful, delicious chiffon cake. Puri-puri! The chiffon was wonderful, thank you, ICHIE! Also, the ladies their that greeted me were very welcoming, thank you! Ideal for the #solotraveler. Just needed a place to rest my head in Tanabe before I embark on the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage the following day. Happy with my overnight stay.

I was very fortunate to have the whole place to myself (the accommodation area) when I was preparing to start the Kumano walk. Mayoumi was so friendly and helpful and made the most delicious chiffon cake for me to take the next day. I would suggest that guests have some other food from the local konbini for breakfast as the cake isn’t enough on its own. I felt very comfortable and safe on my own. The facilities are very traditional but that is the charm. Do not expect “shiny and new”. The space was clean and more than enough. The hospitality was outstanding.
